When my mother died very unexpectedly, I decided to partake in the ancient Jewish ritual of purification of the dead for her. This beautiful rite includes prayers, songs and a loving cleaning and dressing of the corpse. Symbolic objects are placed in the coffin and the lid is shut on the life of the person. What an honor to escort my mother out with all of my love. What an honor to wash and comb and tie and dress my mother as she had done for me. I shall always remember these sacred last moments of togetherness.
