The Curses

Embroidery on muslin with b'dikah cloths painted with acrylic paints

Each panel 24" x 14"

These embroidered banners titled The Curses, show the negative affects menstruation can have on women. The languid, sinuous lines abstractive physical manifestations depicted. Traditionally, embroidery has been a female pastime primarily used for decoration. I am using the embroidery to show negative female symptoms. At the bottom are b’dikah cloths painted with colorful abstractions. These are cloths used by traditional women to check for purity at the end of their menstrual period.

In creating a set of beautiful visuals for a life event that holds universal understanding, I hope to open the topic of Niddah as a conduit for esthetic artistic expression.
